  • What is One Water?

One Water is a term used to denote that all water, regardless of origin, has value, and this resource should be managed in an integrated, sustainable, and inclusive way. One Water is a way to break down silos in the water industry — storm water, residential, commercial, industrial, municipal, wastewater and drinking water, etc.— to highlight how all water is connected and how establishing water values is critical to  the future sustainability of it as a human right. One Water also aims to bring all stakeholders together to solve water challenges. Learn more here.

  • Why care about One Water?

Because all water is connected. What happens to water in one part of the water cycle impacts all the others. For example: the water you flush down the toilet enters the sewer system and is conveyed to a wastewater plant where it is treated to EPA standards. After meeting those standards, it is discharged to a local waterway such as a river, lake, or stream. Those waterways flow into drinking water reservoirs and aquifers or infiltrate into ground water aquifers. Drinking water plants then take in that water and treat it to drinking water standards so it comes out of your tap. If contamination were to occur at any point, it would impact water at every intersection. That’s why One Water is so critical. All water has value, regardless of its source.
